Injury Prevention Provider Training Manual

Do you want to prevent tragedy before it occurs? You want to better understand what are the main causes of injuries in your communities so that you implement a prevention program that best fits your community needs? This resource will provide you up-to-date information on injury prevention strategies for the emergency department and community settings. It is an invaluable resource for emergency nurses who manage, implement, teach and/or evaluate injury prevention programs.

An analogy that clearly depicts how important it is for ED nurses to understand the root cause of injuries before they can effectively prevent tragedy:

“You know, sometimes it feels like this: There I am standing by the shore of a swiftly flowing river and I hear the cry of a drowning man. So I jump into the river, put my arms around him, pull him to shore, and apply artificial respiration. Just when he begins to breathe, there is another cry for help. So I jump in the river, reach him, pull him to shore, apply artificial respiration, and just as he begins to breathe, there is another cry for help. So back in the river again, reaching, pulling, and applying breathing support and then another yell. Again and again, without end, goes the sequence. You know, I am so busy jumping in, pulling them to shore and applying respiration that I have no time to see who in the hell is upstream pushing them all in."
